Abraham G. Brownfield Jr., affectionately known as “Abe,” was born on June 27, 1937, in Mer Rouge, Louisiana, to the late Bessie King and Abe Brownfield. He began his education at Morehouse Training School in Bastrop, Louisiana, where he graduated in 1955. He continued his academic journey at Southern University in Baton Rouge, completing two years of study before being drafted into the United States Army—an event that would shape the course of his life.
Abe served with honor in Korea and later reenlisted, committing himself to a distinguished 30-year military career. Rising through the ranks to Sergeant Major, he served in numerous leadership roles, including Drill Sergeant at Fort Polk. In 1980, he graduated from the United States Sergeant Major Academy, a testament to his excellence, discipline, and commitment to service.
His career took him across the globe and the country. He proudly served three years in Heidelberg, Germany, followed by four years at the 87th Maneuver Aerial Command in Hoover, Alabama. He concluded his military service in 1991 while assigned to the ROTC Program at Jackson State University, where he played a pivotal role in developing future generations of leaders.
Following his military retirement, Abe continued his dedication to mentorship and education as an instructor in the Junior ROTC program within the Jackson Public School District. He served at Murrah High School in Jackson, Mississippi, where he influenced and guided countless young cadets until his retirement in 2001.
Abe was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, and his beloved wife, Epsie L. Broughton-Brownfield. He is survived by his son, A.G. Brownfield III.
Outside of his professional life, Abe was known for his love of the outdoors and hands-on craftsmanship. He was an avid gardener and found great joy in repairing automobiles and farm equipment. He also cherished his time fishing from his boat—a peaceful pastime that reflected his quiet strength and love of nature.
Abe will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former students, and the many soldiers and cadets he trained and served alongside throughout his remarkable life. His legacy of service, discipline, and generosity continues in the lives of all who were touched by his leadership and kindness.
