Philip S Matheny

Philip S. Matheny, Sr., age 66, passed away on May 25, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Big Spring, TX, resided in Harvey, LA and later retiring in Hazlehurst, MS, Philip built a quiet and peaceful life devoted to family and the people he loved.

Philip was the beloved husband of Iris Matheny for 48 wonderful years. Together they created a strong and loving family that will continue to carry on his memory. He was a devoted father to Philip Matheny, Jr. and Jessica “JJ” Asselstine; a proud grandfather to Lindsey Scheibe and Makaylah Matheny; and step-grandfather to Cullen McKinley and Landen Asselstine.

He is also survived by his mother, Marlene Matheny; his brother, Douglas (Kelly) Matheny; his sister, Aimee (Mark) Matheny-Minorik; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, James “Jim” Matheny; his son, James “Jimmy” Matheny; and his grandson, Melvin Matheny.

Philip was a talented carpenter who took great pride in his work and craftmanship. He enjoyed hunting and treasured the time spent outdoors with family and friends. Those who knew him will remember his love for his family, his quiet strength, and the lasting memories he created throughout his life.

Philip will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who loved him. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 610 6th St., Gretna, LA 70053 on Saturday, June 20, 2026. Visitation will begin at 10am with Mass starting at 11am.
